This remarkably capable yacht was conceived by long term yacht owners after very careful considerations of quality production yachts available at the time (read the design perspective section). With her two spacious staterooms plus crew/utility cabin she can whisk her owners and guests to destinations at cruise speeds of 20 knots. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens and built by renowned Lyman Morse she is a yacht that could not be built today for less than 4-5 times the asking price. She has been maintained by the builders yard since new, to the highest possible standard, and looks like a lady half her age.

Background - Designed and built for very knowledgeable yacht owners who planned on extensive cruising in New England and a bit in the Canadian Maritimes as well as some trips south to the Bahamas and perhaps a bit further afield with guests and family. They considered and closely inspected a number of high quality production yachts; among them the Grand Banks 49/52, Offshore 54, but chiefly the Fleming 55. Given their background and the desire to build a yacht that was perfect for them and liking some of the features on each or the above but not satisfied completely with any of them, they chose Sparkman and Stephens as a naval architect and Lyman Morse as the builder; Both of them with sterling reputations in their own right.

The result is a yacht with notable sea keeping ability, but providing much higher cruise speeds than any of the other builders with similar horse power (cruise speed achieved day of listing was over 20 knots at 80% engine load. Coupled with the very high level of fit and finish and general living comfort NIGHTHAWK represents a compelling package that is difficult to match without going and having another custom yacht built.

Vessel Walk Thru

NIGHTHAWK accommodates up to five owners and guests in a two stateroom layout with a third cabin affording utility space and a berth for a crew member if one is desired. Finished in full varnished Cherry with varnished Teak and Holly soles throughout, an abundance of natural light and ventilation courtesy of large stainless steel ports and fixed and sliding windows in the salon. All opening windows and ports have screens. When natural ventilation is not sufficient there is ample reverse cycle air conditioning (heats and cools). Artificial lighting is equally abundant with recessed overhead lighting throughout and reading lamps at all berths and settees. Both the salon and pilothouse settees are also in excess of 6'-6" and could be used as berth is a pinch. Headroom is an impressive 6'-8" in the Salon and Pilothouse and ranges from 6'4" to 6-8" below decks.

Starting forward is the Owner's Stateroom featuring an island queen berth 6'-6" by 4'-8" berth with cargo drawers below, to P&S there are his and hers bureaus with drawers and hanging lockers. A separate stall shower compartment is aft and to port and the Owner's private head is aft and to starboard. The head is fitted with a Vacuflush W.C and fore and aft vanity with Corian counter top and custom accent tiles.

Aft and to port is the Guest Stateroom featuring fore and aft generous twin berths, inboard there is an equally ample upper berth. Plenty of storage in drawers under the berths, in a night stand between and in a hanging locker forward. At the forward bulkhead is the Guest Head, featuring an ensuite shower, Vacuflush W.C., vanity with Corian counter and custom accent tiles in the backsplash.

Opposite to starboard is the Utility/Crew cabin which has a 6'-6" berth, separate Asko washer dryer units, additional freezer compartment, Vacuflush W.C. and small vanity with sink.

Up four steps to the Salon & Galley. These spaces are light filled, surrounded by large windows, several of them with sliders and screens. To port and forward is the U shaped galley fitted with Corain counter tops with a cutting board insert, large deep single basin sink and extensive storage. Cooking is on a Force 10, four burner propane stove with oven with a GE microwave providing ability to do re-heats. Generous chilled food stuff capacity in a Nova Kool refrigerator and freezer. To starboard is a large U-line Icemaker.

Aft is the Salon with a 6-6" plus settee to port with built in "end tables" fore and aft and cabinet for a flat panel TV. dining is from a large cherry pedestal table with storage under. To starboard there is a writing desk aft, entertainment system console mid and bureau with storage and the ice maker forward. Between these fixtures are two very comfortable custom Thomas Moser cherry chairs. Below the starboard windows are additional cabinets and bookshelves.

Up four steps to the Pilothouse with side doors P&S, centerline Stidd seat and adjoining custom cherry companion or navigators seat while aft and to port and an L-settee and large table where the entire crew may join the skipper. Above the settee is a beautifully crafted book case.

A companionway aft and just off centerline takes us to the Flying Bridge and boat deck. Immediately to port is the upper helm with double bench seat with storage under while to starboard is an L-settee with some storage under. The boat deck aft has room for deck chairs, an aft facing bench seat with storage, grill to port along with tender storage and the hydro electric davit with not only power hoist and boom lift but right and left slew as well.

Aft is a hatch and ladder that allows direct access to the Cockpit and Main Decks. The cockpit has a bench seat aft with storage under adjacent to the transom door while forward and to starboard is cockpit maneuvering station and to port an outside companionway to the engine room. The side decks have high bulwarks with stainless steel safety rails and side doors as well as flush access hatches to storage lockers, leading to the Portuguese Bridge with storage in the bulwarks; center line access to the foredeck which has bench seats P&S, forward there are two storage lockers either side of the anchor windlass. Construction, Hull and Deck

NIGHTHAWK, a custom deep-V, designed by Sparkman and Stephens was constructed using the patented SCRIMP system using vinylester resin in all laminates for superior blister resistance. Corecell closed cell coring is used throughout the hull, deck, and house primarily for weight mitigation and stiffness as well as sound and insulation properties. The core tapers to solid fiberglass on centerline, at the rail and at the rudder posts, shaft struts and shaft runs with extra layers. The finish from the boot stripe to the house top is Awlgrip. The structural bulkheads were also constructed using SCRIMP.

In 2009 all windows and hardware, grab rails etc were removed and the yacht was refinished in her entirety with Awlgrip. The bottom was soda blasted barrier coated and finished with ablative paint and kept fair with no build up since. All windows were replaced in the 2009 re-fit.
