Real-World Testing on the Targa 32
Today, we’re taking the Targa 32 out for a full performance run—testing everything from comfortable cruising to wide-open throttle. Along the way, we’re monitoring key stats like fuel burn, nautical miles per gallon (NM/G), and engine load efficiency to give you a complete picture of how this rugged, all-season cruiser performs on the water.
Unexpected Power and Acceleration
At first glance, the Targa 32 looks like a traditional, tough-as-nails utility boat. But once you’re at the helm, the performance is surprisingly sporty. From a smooth idle at 1,000 RPM, we pushed the throttles forward and immediately felt the surge. The supercharger and turbocharger kick in fast, delivering a smooth yet powerful launch.
In seconds, we’re at 26 knots… then 28… 30… and cruising effortlessly at 33 knots. The acceleration is strong and confidence-inspiring. At wide-open throttle, we hit 37–38 knots, all while maintaining control and comfort. This isn’t just a capable boat—it’s one that keeps up with center consoles known for their speed.
Cruising Comfort and Fuel Efficiency
At 3,000 RPM, the boat settles into a solid 31.5-knot cruise with an engine load of just 73%. You can easily cruise all day at 80% load and 33 knots with minimal effort. This test boat is powered by twin D4 320 HP Volvo Penta engines, offering a great mix of performance and utility. With these engines, there’s enough power margin to support additional systems like air conditioning and a generator.
Even with those upgrades onboard, fuel efficiency remains strong—burning 21 gallons per hour at cruising speeds, with an estimated range of 280 nautical miles. That’s enough to make the trip from Portland, Maine to Old Saybrook, Connecticut on a single tank. The ride is smooth, the cabin is quiet, and the overall experience is a noticeable step above other diesel-powered boats in its class.
A Rugged Design With Exceptionally High Performance
The Targa 32 may appear traditional and utilitarian, but its performance and refinement exceed expectations. Whether cruising at efficient speeds or going full throttle, this model delivers an exceptional combination of power, control, and comfort. If you’re looking for a serious, all-weather boat that won’t back down from any challenge—while still delivering a smooth, fast ride—the Targa 32 deserves a place at the top of your list.
