Calmati is a well maintained and significantly upgraded Azimut 54. "There's definitely something exciting about the way Italians do things. They turn simple foods in to a mangia abbondanza - a feast. A talk amongst friends is not just talk; it is conversazione, with enough animation to make even banter about pasta an event. Then there's the way the Italians build boats.
I noticed it the first time I saw the Azimut 54 - her grande nel design by Stefano Righini, which takes form in the sharply raked deckhouse, streamlined profile, abundant curves, and Azimut's trademark elliptical windows. With a style like this she looks very fast, which is what the Italians call molto veloce. But while there's much to look at above the waterline, it's the way she's designed and built - like a fine antipasto, from the bottom up - that caught my eye.
The 54 has a deep-V hull with a variable-deadrise that tapers to 18 degrees aft. Her hand-laid fiberglass construction uses Epacryn resin plus isophthalic resins to guard against osmosis. Construction
"The 54 has a deep-V hull with a variable-deadrise that tapers to 18 degrees aft. Her hand-laid fiberglass construction uses Epacryn resin plus isophthalic resins to guard against osmosis. In addition, Azimut claims these resins have lower shrinkage and two-and-one-half times better flexibility than conventional resins.
Azimut's lay-up schedule also includes laminates with nonwoven fabrics, which it claims are stronger and stiffer than woven fabrics and require less resin to wet out. The texture of these biaxial and multiaxial fabrics also won't print-through the gelcoat after curing, as mat and woven roving can. For added strength with less weight, Azimut uses Divinycell foam sandwich in the hull above the waterline and in the decks and deckhouse.
Azimut also uses computer-aided design to produce the exact dimensions of all interior structures, which makes the construction process more efficient. Once the Azimut Design Team finalizes and approves the plans, a highly accurate computer-interfaced pantograph (an instrument used for making precise copies of a predetermined shape) instructs a digitally controlled router to cut each component out of a sheet of the appropriate material. This not only ensures prefect fir and finish but reduces waste, resulting in lower costs.

Calmati offers a large salon with an entertainment console, galley, and settee aft of the main helm position. Forward of the helm station and down the companionway steps you will find 3 staterooms and heads. There is also a small crew quarters aft and beneath the cockpit. Scott makes his passion his career. Growing up in a sailing family, Scott was on yachts from an early age cruising Block Island Sound as well as the Maine Coast. Upon entering college, he started racing and was introduced to dinghy sailing where he honed his skills. After college Scott joined the Living Classroom Foundation in Baltimore originally as a volunteer and then as an employee where he taught sailing to inner city youth, assisted with their boat building program and met his wife of 22 years, Alex.
Returning to Maine in 1998, Scott started his professional career in the yachting industry by taking a job with Sun Yachts in Camden, Maine as a Sales Agent. From Camden, Maine Scott worked his way up through the ranks as he moved to Portland, Maine as the Crewed Yacht Supervisor for Stardust. Then on to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands for 7 Years as the Caribbean Yacht Sales Manager for Sunsail. He then moved to Ft Lauderdale, Florida to take on the position of Global Sales Manager for Leopard Catamarans for 7 years. In 2014 Scott returned home again with his family and joined East Coast Yacht Sales taking over the Camden Office and then opening a second office in Belfast, ME.
